Whether Rich or Poor, Have an Altruistic Mind
Some eminent monks and masters are afraid of being burdened by fame,
故决不贪计个人财物,常常以苦行僧的面目调化众生;
so they choose not to cling to personal possessions and often adopt the appearance of ascetic practitioners in order to guide living beings.
But there are also highly accomplished masters who, in order to benefit more beings, are obliged to be “tainted” by worldly fame and gain.
Patrul Rinpoche and Kongtrul Yönten Gyatso were both renowned adepts during their time,
and they were also intimate friends.
Kongtrul Rinpoche had many disciples in Sershul, and in his daily life, he was like the moon surrounded by a myriad of stars.
Even his horses and possessions were too numerous to count.
One time when the two were together, Patrul Rinpoche grew tired of Kongtrul Rinpoche’s fame and accumulated wealth,
so he said to those beside him, “Kongtrul Yönten Gyatso now enjoys widespread renown and abundant wealth.
For an ascetic monk like me to remain here would greatly spoil the scene, I fear. It is better that I leave.”
When Kongtrul Rinpoche heard this, he begged repeatedly for him to stay.
Patrul Rinpoche said jokingly, “Back when we listened to the Buddhadharma at the feet of Gyurme Thutob Namgyal in Shechen,
were our clothes threadbare, but our house was also simple and crude, and we were frequently bullied by others.
not onlyTo fill our stomachs, we often went begging for alms together.
Do you remember that?
Now you have become a famous high monk and no longer need me to do anything for you.
What point is there in my staying here?”
Upon hearing this, Kongtrul Rinpoche shook his head and said, “Please do not think that way.
I am compelled to do some things against my will, but I am definitely not coveting personal gain.
If it weren’t for the fact that it may benefit living beings. . . .”
Hearing his dear friend’s explanation, Patrul Rinpoche nodded his head in understanding.
Consider these two great masters who surpassed the ancients and amazed their contemporaries.
One took the form of an ascetic monk to guide living beings to liberation,
and the other the appearance of an affluent monk to benefit beings.
But regardless of how they appeared, they were both selfless and served wholeheartedly to benefit living beings.
In contrast, some people think of only themselves deep down, and they covet fame and fortune by hook or by crook.
How is this worthy of reverence by anyone?
